Meal Deal

“Meal Deal” takes this everyday object as a starting point to examine the increasingly constrained living conditions of young creators in London. Soaring rents and stagnant wages have turned the “cheap lunch” from a choice into a necessary compromise, reflecting a broader neoliberal reality in which individuals are compelled to constantly optimize their bodies, time, and desires to meet market demands.
The participating artists approach the “Meal Deal” both as a symbol and as a material. Through irony, parody, and critical appropriation, they reveal an inherent cultural contradiction: the commodification of survival presented as a matter of choice. Receipts, packaging, and advertising aesthetics are repurposed within the works to serve as vehicles of critique, exposing the deeper mechanisms of exploitation behind the notion of “convenience.”
